A young man once wanted to fool the wisest man in the village. So he captured a small bird and took it to the wise man. He thought to himself, “I will fool the wise man. I will ask him if the bird in my hands is alive or dead. If he says, ‘alive,’ I will crush the bird. If he says, ‘dead,’ I will release the bird.”

So when the young man arrived at the home of the wise man, he asked, “Is the bird in my hands alive or dead?”

The wise man answered, “The answer is in your hands.”

If we equate the law to the little bird, it is the role of a judge to be like the wise man and be a fair and impartial caretaker of the law, so that it can live, flourish, and benefit us all. If elected, I promise that I will strive, regardless of my personal views, to be a wise caretaker of the law and honor the trust that society has placed in judges to be fair, to be impartial, and to follow and uphold the law.
